âWhat a relief,â said Argie with a big smile. âSee you later!â And he headed off to help the next poor customer.
Louis and Catalogue flicked to the back of the book and found a picture index.
âHas it got koombarbars in it?â asked Catalogue.
âYes,â replied Louis. âLoads!â
They turned to the page for Ice Cucumbers and Louis read:
The Ice Cucumber is the rarest of all mystical cucumbers. In fact, it is one of the rarest of all mystical fruits and vegetables, except perhaps for the Prune of Destiny and of course the Rhubarb of Small Curses.
The Ice Cucumber does not grow where you might expect to find it â that is â the far north or far south in the icy poles. No! In fact, it grows in another very cold place: the depths of the ocean. It grows where there is no light, or at least, no normal light. Magical rays of light do penetrate to the deepest ocean floor. This magical light is the only light that helps the Ice Cucumbers grow, and perhaps explains their amazing and dangerous powers. The Ice Cucumber is quite safe to touch, but must never be eaten. Even one small slice immediately freezes your entire body. Two slices would turn you into an everlasting ice statue. Youâd be so cold you would never melt, even in the searing deserts of Swelter. And if you were able to eat an entire Ice Cucumber . . . well, who knows what might happen!?
